Liffey’s odd thoughts on the Oscar nominations…
Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”) and Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”) are both nominated for playing men.
Another actress, Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) one could argue looks like a man. Is this really the same cutie who was in “Social Network” ?
Lead actor: I don’t know who the hell Demian Bichir is. Yea, it’s kinda surprising Gary Oldman has never been nominated. I think he should have been for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” And maybe a supporting nom for his tiny part as Drexyl in “True Romance.”
Supporting Actor: Nick Nolte for “Warrior.” Haven’t seen it. He could have been nominated in the same category for “The Thin Red Line.”
Supporting Actress: Another nod to a movie nobody’s seen – “Albert Nobbs.” I think Janet McTeer, like Close, dresses like a man. No thank you. I do give the Academy credit for nominating an actress for playing a character who takes a thundershit in a bathroom sink. Let’s see Meryl Streep do that.
Melissa’s nomination brings to mind Kevin Kline’s nom for his comedic role in “A Fish Called Wanda.” He won.
Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” is nominated for best picture. His last film in this category, “The Thin Red Line”, should have won over “Saving Private Ryan.”
I think “Melancholia” was unfairly shut out. I hope Woody Allen shows up. I hope Kenneth Branagh doesn’t.
Hottest chick nominated for an Oscar: Berenice Bejo (“The Artist”).
