You’re not that cool, WXRT

Posted on November 2, 2011

You don’t realize how lame Chicagoland radio is until you travel around the country. It’s really pathetic that this major city has such crappy radio. To say WXRT is the best in the city is like saying it’s the cleanest toilet at a Speedway gas station. Out of touch? Tired, old? It’s like they don’t know what’s cool to play anymore. Here’s an example: More than likely, when you hear an INXS song on ‘xrt it’s going to be the tired “Devil Inside” or “Suicide Blonde.”  How about digging a little deeper into the catalogue with “Original Sin” or “Kiss the Dirt” ??? And I really believe I hear the same Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin songs over and over. ‘xrt ain’t much more than a…

Occupy Octoberfest

Posted on October 11, 2011

Occupy Octoberfest on Saturday in Whiting and Crown Point was a success. We got what we demanded: Beer. The two best Octoberfest beer gardens in the region banjaxed us by scheduling them on the same day. Oct. 8. No worries, as we managed a scramble to both. Whiting was first because it was scheduled to end at 10 p.m., whereas CP’s extended to 11 p.m. This year’s Whiting Octoberfest beer garden seemed bigger compared to ’10. The band was The Hat Guys, popular in Chicagoland, I’m told and a good party band. I’m not that familiar with them but they take a  lot of pics. They have a bandmember who’s instrument I think is the camera. He’s always snapping photos of the crowds (especially…

Cracker at the Popcorn Fest

Posted on August 31, 2011

The alternative rock, folksy, pyschtrippy, alt-country band Cracker is the main stage entertainment at Valparaiso’s Popcorn Festival Sept. 10. I bet you ask most Northwest Indiana folks who these guys are and they don’t know. Oh sure, the music community might. But I don’t think Valpo-ites and fellow NWI Hoosiers really appreciate what they’ve got that night. A true kick-ass band. Been around since the early ’90s. A lot of people will know, when they hear them (assuming they perform them) their songs “Teen Angst” and “Low.” Liffey’s personal favorite is “The Good Life” (1998) and “Be My Love” (2000). The boys also put out an alt-country cover album (except for one song) in ’03 called Countrysides. By the way this isn’t the band’s…
