Chicago’s WXRT is taunting me. I’ve poked fun at them in the past about their playlist, using “Devil Inside” by INXS as an example of laziness and an ignorance of eclectic. Then last week during a few dial turns to 93.1 FM I came across “Devil” yet again. Twice. They’re in need of a song monitor…a song czar…to stop the insanity. Does anyone at the studio ever say, “shit, we’re playing this again?” Here’s proof of their ignorance. They’re celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. This weekend is the 80s flashback. I was flipping through Chicago radio stations the other day and twice came upon Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” in the period of 30 minutes. That’s just ridiculous. Surprisingly, one of the accused wasn’t WXRT, which I rail on quite often because supposedly they’re cool and eclectic but really aren’t. Sure, they have a fine alternative HD feed but unless you own one of those radios or aren’t too far from the source you ain’t hearing that music. Point is, that should be their No. 1 music feed and what they currently provide on 93.1 should be the “No. 2” station. But HD radio is for another discussion. Bad, Chicago radio, bad. Sometimes I even think the small, NWI station Z107.1 is more eclectic.…
You don’t realize how lame Chicagoland radio is until you travel around the country. It’s really pathetic that this major city has such crappy radio. To say WXRT is the best in the city is like saying it’s the cleanest toilet at a Speedway gas station. Out of touch? Tired, old? It’s like they don’t know what’s cool to play anymore. Here’s an example: More than likely, when you hear an INXS song on ‘xrt it’s going to be the tired “Devil Inside” or “Suicide Blonde.” How about digging a little deeper into the catalogue with “Original Sin” or “Kiss the Dirt” ???
